First called mountain Victoire, it was sanctified by christians in the Middle Ages and became Saint Venture.
During 13th century, a priory was built at the summit.
The mountain's present name appeared on 15th century without obvious reason.
In 1875, a huge and 62 feet high cross was installed on top of the spur overhanging the priory at 3090 feet above sealevel.
It happens to be the fourth cross built on the site, traces of the previous ones could be found untill the 16th century, at this period a sailor in distress had made a vow to build a cross on the first emerging mountain he would meet.
The cross was first restored in 1982, then in 2004.
