Stiff lighthouse is one the Ouessant Island lighthouses.
In 1699, Vauban (the foremost military engineer of his age), decided to build two truncated cone shaped towers on top of Stiff cliff, highest point of Ouessant Island.
It is one of the first six lighthouses built by Vauban.
One of the two masonry towers holds the lamp and the other one holds the staircase.
Two symmetrical housing buildings can also be found on the 4000 square meters site.
This lighthouse was electrified in 1957 and automated in 1993.
A nearby watch tower was built in 1978 to increase surveillance of the Manche sea traffic.
Visitors are welcome in July and August.
