Portzic lighthouse was built in 1848 on a military terrain at the same time than Petit Minou lighthouse, both at Brest narrows.
It was electrified in 1953 and automated in 1984.
It faces "la Pointe des Espagnols" (Spaniards Cape) at Brest narrows entry, on roads side.
Specific features :
1 sectored main light with 2 occultations and 10 seconds interval (2 seconds flash, then a 6 seconds one).
Two directional sparkling lights are aimed towards narrows. A continuous one (one flash per second, as a "Northern signal", indicating that the ship is on channel's northern part) another scintillating one (6 flashes, one per second), as a "South signal", showing a south position of the ship.
A semaphore with a permanent look-out man is located at the lighthouse's base, serving as a regulator for Brest harbour in and out traffic.
