As a result of its remote location, extreme difficulties in its building process and the dangerous staff relief operations, AR-MEN is one of the most famous lighthouses.
In the small sea lighthouses world (Kéréon,La Veille, la Jument, among others) it became a real myth.
Lighthouse keepers community considered it as a highly demanding workplace and nicknamed it "Hell of all Hells".
The usual 15 days shift was often postponed due to high winds and an extremely heavy sea.
During storms the whole building shook under the heavy swell bumpings, to a point where objects hanging from the walls could fall.
AR-MEN 's history is said to begin in the night of september 23rd 1859 whith the tragic sinking of an imperial frigate named Sané, driven to the rocks of Sein Island sea wall.
A very poor beaconing was only available at that time and lights offered a very short reach.
Today, as many others, AR-MEN is in a sorry plight as shown on these photos by Pascal.
